Making Use of Those Holiday Leftovers
apartment, turkey, casserole
So your refrigerator may be packed full of leftovers from a plentiful thanksgiving meal at your apartment. Sick of just picking at the turkey and heating up the potatoes?
Leftovers are my favorite part of the whole holiday meal experience and I have several ideas to help you get rid of them before they go bad without making you feel fowl about eating so much turkey.
Make a Sandwich - This may seem obvious to everyone, but making a turkey sandwich, doused in mayo is the easiest and most proficient way to go. The mayo keeps the turkey from seeming too dry. If you wish to delve outside of traditional turkey sandwiches, try this: Smear leftover mashed potatoes on the bread, throw some slices/pieces of turkey on top, and then smother that in a little bit of gravy. Put the pieces of bread together and you have a messy, but incredibly tasty 'leftover' sandwich that is quite filling.
Casserole - Honestly, this sounds a little gross, but a friend's mother used to make a casserole dish out of all of their left overs. It's fairly easy to do, and honestly tastes incredible. First, layer the bottom of a casserole dish with your leftover mashed potatoes. Next, layer green bean casserole on top of the potatoes. If no green bean casserole, just pour a can of cream of mushroom soup and two cans of green beans into the dish on top of the potatoes. Now its time for the turkey. Break up the turkey into bits and pieces and spread it around in the casserole. For best results, mix all of the ingredients well inside that dish. Pop this in the oven at 350 degrees for about 15 minutes. Being careful of it being hot, pull the dish out, sprinkle some french fried onions on the top and pop it back in the oven for 3-5 minutes. After that, you should be all set with a leftover casserole that tastes wonderful and helps combine all of those separate dishes into one!
Donate them - Another great thing to do with leftovers is to donate them to either a homeless shelter, through a church, or even directly to the homeless. Sometimes the shelters are a little wary of taking in food donation wise, but many churches have programs set up to take in your leftovers and make sure they are received by those in need. This may also be a time to go through your closets and find old jackets or blankets and donate them as well. Remember, what may be doing you no good sitting in your closet or fridge, can do a ton of good to those in need.
Now...for getting rid of your pie...I would like to give you my home address so that you can hand deliver them to me and I will find a proper way of disposing your pies and/or your cakes. (-: Okay...not really, but I'm sure you will have no trouble getting rid of your dessert leftovers.
I hope everyone had a safe and happy weekend. Time to start decorating for Christmas. I'll be throwing you some Christmas decorating tips very shortly!
